The concentration of ownership of the means of production by the capitalists and the subjugation of labor to capital would come to define the class struggle by the late eighteenth century. Adam Smith penetrated to the very core of the contradiction that would plague capitalism until the end of its reign. Smith saw a correlation between the enclosure of land and the enclosure of the tools of craftsmen. In both cases, millions of people were separated from control over the means of their economic survival. In the first instance, the serfs and peasant farmers were expelled from their ancestral lands and, in the second instance , craftsmen were separated from the tools of their trade.
